Social Value

At CMP, we are committed to driving diversity, inclusion, and long-term growth within the water industry. Through targeted programs like Gems in STEM™, SWIFT™, and WISER, we support individuals at every stage of their career journey—from inspiring students to pursue STEM pathways to helping professionals thrive and advance in their careers.

We recognize that averting the ongoing STEM crisis requires sustained investment and collaboration. According to the 2017 Engineers Australia report “Engineers Make Things Happen: The Need for an Engineering Pipeline Strategy,” the percentage of boys studying advanced maths dropped from 15.9% in 2011 to 11.5% in 2015, and the percentage studying intermediate maths fell from 38.6% to 28.4% over the same period. Even more concerning, only 13% of engineers are female.

By combining education, mentorship, and advocacy, CMP is actively working to address these challenges. Through our programs, we are helping to build an equitable and inclusive water industry that not only empowers individuals but also fosters lasting, positive change that can avert this critical crisis in the STEM field.

Gems in STEM

The Gems in STEM Program was created in 2018 by CMP to work with a select group of schools across Victoria to educate, advocate and inspire students in STEM. The Program includes an overview of the crisis in STEM, the climate crisis, what Engineers and Scientists do to improve lives, liveability, and outcomes for our planet.

We believe averting the crisis in STEM will not happen overnight.  We need to invest time in our primary and secondary school students over a long period of time to turn things around. CMP and our Partners are committed to making a difference for a long time into the future. Part of the program is also to give interested students the opportunity to apply for work experience through CMP’s work experience program.

SWIFT

Securing Water Industry Future Talent
The SWIFT Program was created in 2023 by CMP to support Year 11 and 12 students from three of our Gems in STEM™ schools from South East Water’s Region, to provide mentoring and support in Years 11 and 12, but also provides a shared work experience program between South East Water and CMP for two SWIFT™ Program Participants each year after their first year of university.  The SWIFT Program Schools are Dandenong High School, Killester College and Toorak College.

Together, we will further mentor and support students into a career in STEM through Years 10, 11, 12 and their first year of university.

WISER

Women in STEM Empowerment
WISER, created by CMP, is a purpose-driven forum that aims to create a supportive network for women where women share the experience, they have in working within a male dominated industry – the successes and the challenges. WISER also encourages understanding and support from all colleagues, including male counterparts.

The forum provides a safe space for learning, discussion, mentoring, and sharing experiences from both CMP and external members. WISER prioritizes key issues and invites female engineers to share their stories on topics such as balancing career and family, experiences of migrant female engineers, working on-site, gender pay gaps, opportunities, and strategies for handling challenging situations. The long-term goal of WISER is to expand the program to include all members of the Victorian Water Industry to create a movement for increased understanding for a better water industry.
